Townsville Businesses Set for Growth
It was interesting reading in the Townsville Bulletin recently that the Condon-Rasmussen-Bohle basis in the 7th fastest growing local area in Australia. Plus of course, the prospect of all the US marines if a base is setup, will really swell numbers. This got me thinking about how Townsville businesses will make the most of this growth. So here are 6 great tips for business success in Townsville:
- Promote your business. Whilst the locals may know you are the best bakery around, how will all the new people and even visitors (remembering the marines will rotate regularly) know about you? Be ahead of your competitors and start thinking about how you can get out there. Don’t forget too that as this growth occurs, so will the growth of your competitors; be one step ahead.
- Go online. If you don’t already have an online presence, then you need to get one. There are of course free options, such as True Local or Hot Frog (which you should definitely utilise) but also look at your own website. How many US marines are simply going to Google “Places to eat in Townsville”. Check out Google Analytics to find out what are the most commonly searched words and work with these.
- Is it long overdue that you freshen up your store, business, menu, product lines etc. A coat of paint, or “spring clean” might be all it takes, but ensure your premises are fresh and energetic – which will draw people in. Don’t forget about your signage. Does it work for you? If you are in the food industry, remember some people will want to try local specialties, like Roo or Croc, but also accommodate those who just want their homely burger and fries.
- Use quiet times to self-educate. These are so many fantastic books on the market – and don’t forget you don’t have to head into a book store these days – order them online with companies like Amazon or Australia’s own Fishpond, which is always offering amazing discounts – plus no postage costs!
- Special Tip for Tradies. There are two things which the pubic whinge the most about tradies. The first is that they don’t turn up, or turn up late and secondly the mess they leave behind. So, if you are a tradie, take this on board. If you say you are going to be somewhere at a certain time, then turn up, and on time. If you are delayed (it does happen), then ring the person and advise them. Secondly, when you do the job – ensure its cleaned up afterwards. That means taking away your rubbish (not dumping it in their bins) and vacuuming or sweeping up properly after yourself.
- Review your back end. Now is the time to look at your back end of your business – and it’s the bookkeeping I’m talking about here. As someone offering Townsville bookkeeping services, and having been in the industry over 25 years, I know that so many small businesses are doing it wrong – or worse just not doing their bookkeeping. I know you get busy, and it’s so painstakingly boring and mundane, and the computer glitches just when you’re in the middle of something … so just because it’s not something you love – don’t neglect this area. Delegate! Most bookkeeping services will charge on an hourly basis; so whether you need an hour, or 10 hours, you pay for what you need and use. Ensure that your bookkeeper is:
Up to date with the data entry:
- Gives you monthly reports so you can see the progress of your business financially
- Answers your questions (and be sure to ask about anything in the reports you don’t understand)
- Meets your BAS deadlines with timely lodgements
- Works well with your Accountant – these guys need to work well as a team.
- And is ready and willing to assist with linked tasks, like Debt Collecting.
I see some exciting times ahead for businesses in Townsville. Just be sure YOUR business is leading the pack, not getting left behind.
